Exploring possibilities of being-together, these lectures create time and space for encounters, ranging from (the roles and responsibilities of) festivals to solidarity and companionship to interdisciplinary research and collective methodologies. Interdisciplinary Alliances with Artistic and AI-Driven Research
The lecture showcases the power of interdisciplinary alliances, revealing how diverse research fields come together to spark innovation and discoveries. First, the cooperation with artists and technicians within the research project VRinMotion is discussed, focusing on artistic research and the works of Anna Vasof and Leonie Vögelin. The second part centers on the project AniVision, where animation scholars collaborate with AI experts for machine learning to detect and analyze animation in ephemeral films in German-speaking countries, including the discovery of female animators Eva Mause and Ilse Kovacevic.

>>> Franziska Proksa (Bruckner) is Head of the Research Group Media Creation at St. Poelten University of Applied Sciences. She organizes the international symposium series Animafest Scanner and co-coordinates AG Animation of the German Society for Media Studies. Her education includes masterdegrees at the University for Applied Arts Vienna and the University of Vienna, where she worked as a University Assistant from 2009 to 2013 and earned her doctorate in 2017. Her research focuses on animation history and analysis, animation in AR/VR environments, and immersive storytelling. Currently, she is the head of the projects VRinMotion (FWF PEEK) and AniVision (FWF-DFG Weave with the University of Tübingen) and part of the project VaCoViCu (FWF Joint Doctoral Program with

This lecture explores several layers and contexts of alliance-building: from the conversations with the people of the Algarve to the companionship between co-directors Laura Gonçalves and Alexandra Ramires, from the collaboration with their team of animators to their collective work within the cooperative BAP Animation Studios, Laura Gonçalves will introduce the audience to the numerous interconnections behind the scenes of their Oscar-shortlisted animated documentary.

>>>In 2009, after graduating from Fine Arts in Lisbon, Alexandra and Laura begin working in animation. Since then, their paths have always been intertwined. They have been part of the technical teams on various films, directed together and separately, and recently started producing. They both believe in the power of collaboration. They are 2 of the 6 founding members of BAP- Animation Studio, a Cooperative of animation authors, which since 2013 has been their nest for developing and making films, along side other internationally recognised authors. Together they made the films Água Mole (2017) and Percebes (2024). Individually: Alexandra directed Elo (2020) and Laura directed Three Weeks in December (2012) and The Garbage Man (2022). These are films with a strong festival path as well as national and international recognition. <<<

Creative Alliances through Documentation and Theory (broadcast live on-site)
Tania de León Yong and María Lorenzo Hernández will speak about their work as guest editors of Animation Practice, Process & Production, which emerged from a need to document and theorize the contributions of women-identifying animators. By creating intentional spaces of recognition, they aim to lighten practices and collaborative strategies that have often been marginalized in animation histories. Through independent formats and collective methodologies, they critically examine how creative alliances reshape animation's development.

>>>Tania de León Yong, PhD in Fine Arts, is an artist and educator specializing in experimental animation. Her work explores the critical intersections of animation, drawing, and technology, with a focus on concepts of time and perception. De León Yong's artistic practice has garnered international recognition, with her work exhibited worldwide. She has contributed to the field through published articles and authored the book Animando al Dibujo: Del guión a la pantalla (FAD, 2 nd edition). Currently, she serves as an Artistic and Scientific Associate at the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln in the field of experimental animation. Additionally, de León Yong is a collaborative researcher with the iA* Arts Research Group at the Universidade da Beira Interior. <<<

>>> María Lorenzo Hernández, PhD in Fine Arts, is Chair Professor of Animation, Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain. She wrote the book La imagen animada. Una historia imprescindible (Diabolo, 2 nd edition) and contributed to Animated Landscapes: History, Form and Function (Bloomsbury), A Companion to Illustration (Willey Blackwell) and The Intersection of Animation, Videogames, and Music (Routledge Music). From 2011 to 2024 she edited the peer reviewed journal Con A de animación. She is also an awarded animation filmmaker. <<<

Animation Festivals as Spaces for Alliances, Solidarity, and Emancipation in the Times of Cultural Backlash
This talk explores the role of animation festivals in a world currently shaped by conservative, populist socio-political shifts which vary by context. Festivals, deeply tied to socio-political realities, cannot remain apolitical, as history shows. Key questions include: What unites festival communities? If we comfort each other by saying "we’re in this together," then who are ‘we,’ where is ‘this,’ and how is the ‘together’ constructed? How do we foster transnational, intersectional solidarity free from patronizing attitudes? And how does our agency translate into bearing the responsibilities that come with organizing film culture?

>>>Olga Bobrowska, PhD, is an animated film scholar, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Journalism and International Relations (IDSM) of the UKEN University in Kraków (Uniwersytet Komisji Edukacji Narodowej), co-founder and festival director of StopTrik International Film Festival (Maribor), film culture activist and curator. She authored two monographs published by CRC Press (Chinese Animated Film and Ideology, 1940s-1970s. Fighting Puppets, 2023; Chinese Animated Film and Ideology. Tradition, Innovation, and Interculturality, 2024). She co-edited the books Obsession, Perversion, Rebellion. Twisted Dreams of Central European Animation (2016) and Propaganda, Ideology, Animation. Twisted Dreams of History (2019). She is a permanent contributor of Zippy Frames. <<<
