Art as a Weapon – JOHN HEARTFIELD AND ME

Katrin Rothe works at the intersection between animated and live-action film and explores the boundaries of documentary and animation. How does animation open up real spaces? How does it deal with documentary material, and how can you bring a paper figure to life in a live-action film? Based on examples from her last films, Katrin Rothe offers insights into how she deals with challenges like these.

Technofeminisms reactualized: early promises revisited

Techno- and cyberfeminism had its first peak in the 1990s. While these early manifestations are sometimes criticized for being overly optimistic from today’s perspective, it is worth noting that criticism and ambivalent stances already formed an inherent part of it back then. Drawing on the exploration of this specific conjunction and some of its actualizations over the past decades, this talk will look at current examples in animation and the visual arts in order to grasp the im/possibilities of the current state and potential of technology.
