IN PERSON: Gina Kamentsky


IN PERSON aims to showcase exceptional positions within the animation landscape and to provide insights into both the creative and technical explorations and the working methods of selected animation artists. With this program, Tricky Women Tricky Realities highlights artists whose bodies of work span a long period of time, exploring, shaping, and challenging the possibilities of animation.

The 2025 IN PERSON program of Tricky Women Tricky Realities is dedicated to Gina Kamentsky.

Gina Kamentsky is an experimental animator and sound artist based in Providence, Rhode Island. Her anxious and joyful short films blast out at twenty-four frames per second, searing eyeballs and sending waves of buzz and crackle into the ether. Over her three-decade career she has progressed through numerous forms and techniques, including painting, drawing and collaging on film, Rotoscope, Musique concrète, sound collage, stop motion, and pixilation. Her films have screened at festivals nationally and worldwide, including the Ottawa International Animation Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Annecy International Animated Film Festival and Animator Festival in Poznań, Poland.

TRAUMA CHAMELEON

An Escaped Laboratory Rat Navigates Through a Sea of Punctuation. The starting point for Trauma Chameleon is a soundtrack mashup of a LibriVox recording of “How to Speak and Write Correctly” by Joseph Devlin written in 1910. The film explores a nervous breakdown of image and language.

The filmmaker assumes a new identity after a mysterious bird flies into her studio during lockdown. Soft and White features a soundtrack mashup from audio book recordings including “One Martian Afternoon” by Tom Leahy.

Familiar figures emerge in a frantic rhythm - a whale, a donkey, and a figure with an ever-growing nose. Deep within, Pinocchio felt a yearning. One day, he would become a real girl and live a life beyond the confines of make-believe.
